Most women fear to go for these visits because of the many misconceptions they may have about these specialists. The good thing is that the gynecologist can diagnose and treat problems which may not have been detected by the general practitioner. Below are the reasons why a woman should see a gynecologist.

General reproductive health
A woman should ensure that they see a gynecologist at least once a year for the regular checkups. This should begin from the teenage years. These checkups are essential in helping to detect any problems early enough for easy successful treatment.

One should have a yearly pelvic examination. This examination will help in detecting any unusual growths or any other changes around this region. These changes include abnormal discharge from the vagina, menstrual problems, and many others. One can also have tests for the sexually transmitted infections for easy treatment.
Irregular periods
More often than not, irregular periods are a sign of a bigger health problem. One should see a gynecologist for a proper examination. The most common problems include irregular cycles, very little bleeding, heavy bleeding and also very painful cramps. Should anyone note any of these problems, they should see a gynecologist immediately.
Family planning
Sexually active people who do not want to get pregnant need family planning. Though most people go to the general practitioner for this, it is advisable to go the gynecologist. This is because they have specialized in reproductive health hence will be able to give proper advice on the birth control methods available. One will be able to find the best method that will suit their body and the lifestyle as well.
Pap smear tests
This should be done annually by every woman. The vaginal tissue removed is sent to the lab for testing for cancer and any other abnormal problems. Some of these problems cannot be detected by an internal examination hence the need for the pap smear tests to ascertain everything is ok.
Breast examination
The gynecologist is not only concerned about the vagina only. They also do breast examinations since breasts are an important part of the woman. Breast examinations help in detecting lumps of breast or changes in tissue masses.
Painful sexual intercourse
Sex is meant to be a pleasurable activity. Should one experience pain during sex, then it shows that something is wrong. The pain may be physical or psychological, but the gynecologist will need to do some examinations and tests to help find out the source of the problem.
Urinary problems
These problems range from painful urination to blood in urine among others. All these should be addressed by the gynecologist so that they are properly diagnosed.

Maternal health
Maternal health is a sensitive issue since one is carrying life. Upon noticing that one is pregnant, they will need to make an appointment to see an obstetrician. They will guide the woman throughout their entire pregnancy and monitor any changes.
These are few of the reasons for seeing a gynecologist. One may see one if they have any other reproductive health-related issues.
